American thespian and writer Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the Tony-nominated production Slave Play, was taken into custody last month at an international terminal in Japan on suspicion of trying to bring in controlled substances into the country, officials stated.

Details of the Customs Incident

The 36-year-old was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a border inspection agent discovered 0.78 grams of a crystal material laced with the designer drug MDMA in his tote bag, according to a customs spokesperson.

He was immediately arrested on suspicion of violating Japan’s strict Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Local customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the public prosecutor to initiate formal charging proceedings against the individual.

Current Status and Judicial Counsel

A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, confirmed that Harris is still being held. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has admitted to the allegations.

Presently, it is not known whether the figure has retained legal representation in Japan. Requests for comment to his representatives were not immediately returned.

Reports indicate Harris had traveled to Okinawa for tourism, journeying from Britain with a layover in Taiwan. Okinawa is a frequent tourist spot to the southwest of Tokyo, famous for its beaches and military installations.
