European Union finance ministers are gathering in the EU capital this morning to address the union's economic agenda, including the pressing question of financial support to the Ukrainian government.

Zelenskyy States Country's Existence Depends on Allies

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in a latest discussion that the country's survival relied on receiving more funds from international partners.

“We trust, with luck, we will get this decision,” he stated to media outlets. If not, “It will be necessary to seek another solution, it concerns our survival. For this reason we need it very much. And I count on our allies.”

European Authorities Advocates €140 Billion Reparations Loan

The EU executive still hopes to convince member states – including Belgium, that is currently blocking the proposal due to legal fears – to move ahead on a €140bn reparations loan based on frozen Russian assets.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen emphasized today that this represents “the most effective way to sustain Kyiv's military and its economy.”

Resolution Delayed Until Year-End Summit

A final decision on the issue has been deferred till the European Council meeting in December, as the financial support required at the start of the coming year.

Discussions Occur Amid Corruption Scandal in Ukraine

But the talks come at a difficult time for Ukraine, as Zelenskyy had to move to contain rising popular anger in Ukraine regarding a bribery incident in the power industry, dismissing several officials allegedly involved in participating in a large-scale bribery scheme.

Danish economic affairs minister Stephanie Lose was asked about her response to the scandal, and insisted that there was commitment to continue supporting Ukraine.

“Naturally, The country will have to persistently focus with reforms, strengthening every sector of the nation [and] that also applies to anti-corruption … but there shouldn’t be any doubt that Europe stands firmly with Ukraine,” she stated.

Other European Events Monitored

Separately, observers will be monitoring the Netherlands where the parliament meets to examine possible directions in the coalition talks, Rome-Tirana discussions in Rome offering the most recent opportunity to witness the remarkable Meloni-Rama dynamics, and a number of high-level conferences across Europe, including the Alliance's the secretary general's visit to a German airbase.
